Beta Build Available

The first post-jam build is now available: Beta2! There were a number of large under-the-hood changes made to improve and stabilize the ship motion & controls, as well as a few small audiovisual tweaks here and there to help polish things up a bit. There's some rambling discussion of these in another post, but in summary the differences between the Beta2 build and the JamBuild are:

  • Score tracking & local high scores list for each track.
  • A new level generator which is intended to give greater design control and allow for a more consistent and balanced experience (still a work in progress, though, so YMMV).
  • Greatly improved gamepad support (gamepad support was present in the original release but... just didn't feel great; it's better, now).
  • Acceleration/braking mechanics are now more in line with traditional racing games, so should be more intuitive to most players.
  • Physics controllers for the player ship were totally overhauled, resolving many bugs and annoyances from the original implementation.
    • It's also now possible to jump off of ramps! This can be used to jump over obstacles, avoid gaps, or jump from one track segment to another.
  • The way the speed boost powerups work has been changed:
    • Each individual arrow can now be collected, rather than the whole group representing "one" speed boost
    • Each collected boost will contribute towards filling your "boost" bar (on the bottom of the screen). This greatly increases your maximum speed and acceleration while active.
    • Each collected boost also contributes a (small) permanent increase to your max speed when NOT boosting.
  • Several new obstacle types were added.
  • Several new sound effects and a new music track.
  • HUD reworked. This went through several versions, and in the end the only elements that seemed really important were the player's health and the boost time remaining.
  • A number of visual tweaks and improvements to many particles and surface materials were made.

If you enjoy this project so far and have a specific area you want to see improved, please feel free to let me know in the comments :) Any feedback or criticism is helpful, and it may help prioritize the work going forward.

Enjoy!
